An Overview of the Three Elementary Report Cards
Wednesday, 26 October 2011

During the 2010-2011 school year, a major change took place with elementary report cards.

This year students will be receiving the following report cards:

1.    Progress Report Card – November 2011

2.    Provincial Report Card – February 2012

3.    Provincial Report Card – June 2012

One major change with report cards has been the replacement of the first-term report card with a progress report. This progress report will be going out in November. This report will not include grades or marks, but will give parents an overview of how their child is progressing. It shows a student's development of the learning skills and work habits during the beginning of the school year as well as the students overall academic performance. A component of the progress report is a parent-teacher conference which takes place after the reports go home.

Another new aspect of report cards this year has been a stronger emphasis on reporting on learning skills, which relates strongly to character education initiatives in schools. The learning skills that will be assessed and reported on are:

-Organization
-Responsibility
-Independent Work
-Collaboration
-Initiative
-Self-Regulation

The new provincial report card that will be sent home in February will consist of an evaluation of a student’s academic learning from September to January.  A major component of this report will be the inclusion of an overview of the development of a student's learning skills and work habits during that period. If parents feel that they would like a parent-teacher conference after receiving their child's report, they may request a conference. The teacher may also request a conference if he/she feels it is necessary.

The final provincial report card will go out in June.  It will provide an evaluation of a student's learning from February to June as well as the development of learning skills and work habits during that period.

Since these report cards are relatively new, parents are strongly encouraged to speak to their child's teacher to seek clarification on any aspect of the report.  Parent-teacher conferences are an excellent opportunity to discuss a student's progress and to ask any questions.
